There’s so many people that want to be writers. It wasn’t like that when I was younger. Everyone wanted to be a rock star or something much more sensible when I was young! But now everyone wants to be a writer of some sort, and many want to be fiction writers. I would ask that very fundamental question, “Do you really want to write, or do you just want the status of being a writer?” Because it would only work for you if you really, really want to write, and it’s not for everybody. You will be frustrated. You will lose a sense of who you are and what you should do in the world if you press on with the idea of being a writer when you don’t even want to write. So I think that’s the biggest question people have to ask themselves if they’re starting out. Not “Do you want to be a writer?” but “Do you want to write?”
