People look at Teach For America, and they think of it as a two-year commitment, that it’s about the two years, and that’s really not what Teach For America is about. It’s about the two years, but it’s also about every year thereafter, and ultimately cultivating a leadership force of folks who know what you know after you’ve taught successfully in a low-income community. Because you can’t do that and ever leave it, because you realize, “Wow, my kids have every bit as much potential as kids everywhere else.” The question is simply, “Are we as a country, as a community, going to give them the kinds of opportunities, and the extra supports they need, to fulfill their true potential?” And once you see that, you realize, “I can’t leave it.”
