The relationship with George H.W. Bush was really an interesting relationship, because he wanted very much for me to be the director of NIH, and it was kind of an interesting situation, where I didn’t want to do that, because I didn’t want to get out of the AIDS business.  I said, “I know I can multitask,” but I really wanted to be the director of NIAID. I wanted to do infectious diseases, and I wanted to lead the AIDS effort.  So he asked me if I would be the NIH Director, and he brought me down to the White House, and I said no, and I thought that would be the end of my relationship with him, and that would be the end of my access.  As it turned out, he said something to me that made me realize what an amazing guy he is.   He looked me in the eye and he said, “You know, I’ve always respected you a lot for all you’ve done, and are doing, and I respect you even more now.”  And I said, “Well he’s just saying that.” I mean he’s going to forget about me.  About two weeks later he invited me down to a lunch at the White House.  So it just was really an extraordinary experience.
