Lech Walesa, Nobel Prize for Peace

[ Video ] Low High    [ Audio ] Quicktime

Lech Walesa

Nobel Prize for Peace

We had the Soviet troops stationed in Poland for 50 years, over 200,000 soldiers based permanently on the territory of Poland. So, people would end up in prisons for some time, very often, they would be beaten up by the police. There were not so many people who would claim to be very courageous. Then again, you have people of different characters. Some are really put off by the hardships, by the difficulties, whereas the others actually strengthen. I was among the latter, who became stronger due to the hardships, and I got involved in my struggle with much more determination.

Herschel Walker, All-American Football Player

[ Video ] Low High    [ Audio ] Quicktime

Herschel Walker

All-American Football Player

For me it is exciting. I don't get nervous. Knock on wood. I don't get nervous before a game, I get excited because this is an opportunity for me to go out there and show what the Lord has done for me. I'm so excited that the Lord has given me this ability, I'm so excited just to go out there, to put on those shoulder pads, put that helmet on, and then go out there and go with it. It's funny because it's not in my nature. I'm more low keyed, but when I get ready to perform, I don't care if there is no one in the stands. I want to go out there and play, because I am ready to go out there and get better. It's like a high. When you are running the ball sometimes, you can't even see behind you but you can feel a person there. It's so wild when you can just feel things, you don't even have to see it. You get the ball, and everything opens up for you. You can tell where everyone is at. Everything is so slow, but yet, you see it on film, it happened so quick. You can tell how many cleats this guy had on his shoes, but yet, it's so quick you don't know how in the world you counted it. You can see this guy coming to tackle, you can see his eyes. You have time to even say what he's thinking. Sometimes the guy is saying, "Oh, geez. How am I going to tackle this guy?" Whether I'm going to hit him at the legs, or try to jump on him and hold him until this ? You can see all this, but yet you see it on film, and it all happened so quick. So, it's like a real big high for me.

Mike Wallace, CBS News Correspondent

[ Video ] Low High    [ Audio ] Quicktime

Mike Wallace

CBS News Correspondent

Mike Wallace: I think because I came late to the game, I felt that I had more to prove, probably, than some others. I find that women have more drive because they have more to prove in television reporting. So, what I had to do was do more of it, work harder at it and in addition, I loved the chore. I mean to work for 60 Minutes, and to be able to go any place in the world, do any story, have enough time on the air, et cetera, there's simply no job in journalism like it. At the beginning, it was a dream. Even now, at the age of 84, I work with people who are half my age or less, and it's the draw of the story. If there is a good story going, why not be there? The only thing, or the main thing that makes it a drag today, is the fact that you have to get on airplanes, and in order to get on airplanes you carry a lot of luggage because you don't trust the airlines to get it there. You have to take off your clothes. You have to walk a mile and a half to the gate, all of that kind of stuff. Frankly, flying is a pain in the ass in 2002. There comes a time. So, I'm cutting back by half, I believe, for the next little while.
