Her 1993 novel <i>The Stone Diaries</i> won Carol Shields international renown. It is the story of Daisy Goodwill Flett, from her birth in Manitoba in 1905 to her old age in Florida in the 1990s. It brought Shields both the Pulitzer Prize in the U.S. and the Governor General's Award in Canada. It is the only book ever to have received both of these honors.
