Samora Machel (1933-1986), first President of the Republic of Mozambique, with his wife Graça. President Machel welcomed exiled South African activists to Mozambique, including Albie Sachs, but was subjected to intense pressure from the white South African government to expel them. President Machel was killed in a plane crash whose cause is still disputed. In 1998, Graça Machel married Nelson Mandela, President of South Africa.
