Marian Anderson (1897-1993) in her historic Easter Sunday concert at the Linclon Memorial in 1939. When the Daughters of the American Revolution refused to allow Anderson to sing at their Constitution Hall in Washington, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt resigned her membership in the organization, and with Interior Secretary Harold Ickes, arranged for Anderson to sing on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Anderson's courage and artistry were a source of inspiration to the young Jessye Norman.
