Milton Cross (1897-1975) confers with a technician prior to a 1940s radio broadcast. Cross hosted the weekly Metropolitan Opera Broadcast for 43 years, beginning in 1931. For listeners across the country, such as young Jessye Norman, his descriptions of the opera's action, the scenic design, and the singers' costumes, were as much a part of the performance as the music itself.
