The American poet and translator Ezra Pound (1885-1972) in 1945. He was confined to a hospital for the criminally insane after making propaganda broadcasts for Fascist Italy during World War II. An early supporter of James Joyce and T.S. Eliot, he also encouraged the young W.S. Merwin.
