East Africa, including Ethiopia. Hadar, where Lucy and her contemporaries were found, is in the upper right hand corner, due west from the Gulf of Aden. The Great Rift Valley, a treasure trove of fossils, runs south from Hadar, through Kenya, down to Olduvai, in Tanzania.
