An Afghan boy flies a kite in the hills overlooking Kabul. Kite flying, the traditional sport of Afghan children, was banned under the fundamentalist Taliban regime, along with dancing, music, and a host of other activities. Reports of the kite flying ban inspired Khaled Hosseini to write his celebrated novel,
The Kite Runner
. Kites reappeared immediately when the Taliban was driven from Kabul.
