General George B. McClellan (1826-1885) was removed from his command by President Lincoln after failing to press his advantage against the rebels. "If General McClellan does not want to use the army, I would like to borrow it for a time," Lincoln is said to have remarked. McClellan later ran for president himself, and was decisively defeated by President Lincoln.
