The Road to Civil Rights lesson takes students on a journey through one of the most significant periods in America's history. Travel through the timeline and listen to key historic figures talk about the events that shaped the future of our country.

Using a traditional backward-design teaching method, this interactive eLearning module delivers historical background on the major events of the civil rights movement, including:

  • Brown vs. Board of Education
  • Rosa Parks Takes a Seat
  • The Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • Bus Desegregation
  • Non-violence and Civil Disobedience Movement
  • Lunch Counter Sit-ins
  • The March on Washington
  • I Have a Dream Speech
  • The March from Selma to Montgomery
  • Voting Rights Act
  • The Assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Delivered through candid conversations, the impressions of six civil rights pioneers provide students with a unique view into how the events of the civil rights movement unfolded. The captivating details come to life as they are relived by Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Congressman John R. Lewis, Maya Angelou, William T. Coleman and Judge Frank M. Johnson.

This module is appropriate for students in grades 7 through 12 in English, Civics, History or other relevant Social Sciences settings.
