THE NOVEL

Module II: Rivers and Tributaries

Pre-Viewing Activity: Student Handout

Before viewing the program consider these questions:

  • What steps do you think a novelist has to take from the initial idea to a finished work?
  • What are the different elements involved in creating a novel?
  • How would describe the structure of a novel? Can you think of an image that would describe it? A train with many cars? A branching tree?
  • If you were going to write a novel, would you try to map it out before starting? Why? Why not?

Story Map Brainstorm
Consider a simple story that you've known since early childhood: Little Red Riding Hood. Use the space below to create a map of the story. How is it put together? Use whatever graphic image you wish to create a visual structure for the story.
