Exploring the Lusitania
Robert D. Ballard with Spencer Dunmore
New York, New York: Warner Books, Inc., 1995
|
Robert Ballard explores the wreck of the passenger liner whose sinking by a German torpedo helped precipitate America's entry into World War I. We crept along the ocean bottom and I looked with interest at the sights: a large boulder, a shy octopus, hordes of fish and crabs peering at us, showing no fear. Within a few minutes, a reddish glow appeared in the gloom ahead, and a massive form took shape before our eyes. Gradually shadows became solid steel. At last we were within nudging distance of the vast wreck of one of history's greatest ships. She seemed to be waiting for us.
