Pros Eisner is right, especially in the field of music. In music, people don’t want to hear the same songs, the same messages, the same guitar licks repeated over and over. They accept it because it's shoved down their throats over MTV and AM-radio, but in truth people are numbed by this formulaic type of music. Being "familiar" or even being #1 on the Top Ten isn't in itself enough to make it good music. Musicians have a responsibility to the industry and to themselves most of all to blaze a new trail, to create something new that speaks to people in a brand new way. It doesn't matter whether they make money at it or not, to conform to what has gone before is not to create music. It's simply copping to the easy -- and often the easy money -- way out. |

Cons It's easy enough for Eisner to say that everyone should be on the edge of risk! He’s made his money, after all, and can basically do whatever he wants. In fact, creativity is not so black and white. If it were, we wouldn't have talented and well-respected musicians like Barbra Streisand, Joni Mitchell, and Harry Connick, Jr. singing and/or arranging old songs in a way they've never been played before. The important thing is heart -- if you’re doing whatever it is just for the money alone, the quality of the art will suffer. But if you truly want to play that song or sing something in a new way that speaks to you, why wouldn't that be considered a creative act? And for that matter, where you choose to play them is nobody's business. Some little-known songwriters are now selling their music to be used in television advertisements. People like hearing good music anywhere, anytime. |
