Pros The arts are valuable subjects and worthy of study all by themselves, but the artistic skills of creativity and problem-solving carry over into all subject areas. To be successful in science and math, students need the creative thinking that comes from studying the arts. Besides, most students need the freedom and spontaneity of the arts in order to survive a lifetime of repetitive work in tedious, non-thinking jobs. |

Cons In a political climate that demands fiscal responsibility, schools must provide a good, basic education. Language, science, math and history must be at the core of the curriculum. Arts education really caters to the talented few. Frankly, employers do not want to hire creative, free thinkers. They need employees who will follow instructions and get the job done. |
