Pros Today's fast-paced economy requires a highly trained and educated work force. It is the responsibility of the public schools to help students quickly identify careers appropriate to their intellectual capacity. Increasing specialization demands that potential employees enter the job market with the necessary skills. Placing high school students on career tracks is an excellent utilitarian program that provides benefits to both the student and the future employer. Society benefits when the efficient use of tax dollars educates productive citizens.
Cons There is no doubt that today's complex society demands workers with specialized skills. But that fact does not justify public schools limiting the potential futures of students through assigned placement in vocational or college prep tracks. The most important educational fact of today's job market is that it demands life-long learning. Forced specialized training for students at the high school level is inappropriate for the long range goals of both the student and future employers. It is most important that a school provide a student with an education that allows freedom of choice -- not predestination.
