President George Bush: Lessons of Leadership

President George Bush: Lessons of Leadership

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"The bipartisan structure of American politics is a stumbling block to finding solutions to life in the 21st century."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
The United States can no longer afford to suffer the consequences of bipartisan politics. Such a political system polarizes the electorate and distorts our response to important issues and problems. Simplistic solutions are seen as either liberal or conservative, right or wrong, yes or no. The pro and con positions in such antagonistic debate often overlook viable solutions that can be found in the middle ground. Today's complex society needs the cooperation of its politicians to find multiple and diverse resolutions.

Cons
Bipartisan politics has played an important and healthy role in American democracy. The two-party system has offered a structure to introduce ideas into the arena of public debate. It has also allowed the majority party to implement its platform into public policy. Those democracies which are unfortunate enough to have multiple political parties must struggle to develop majorities with enough power to run the government. Bipartisan politics is not the enemy; it is a blessing.
