So, You Want to be a Writer?

So, You Want to be a Writer?

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"It is more important to learn expository writing skills than it is to learn creative writing skills."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
Learning to write is learning to think. The thought processes learned in expository writing are the same sequential skills of logic that are sadly lacking in contemporary problem-solving efforts. Poetry may be beautiful, but an explanatory five-paragraph essay can solve business dilemmas, clarify scientific issues, and offer concise political solutions.

Cons
Learning to write well is an excellent idea. But the human brain is more complex than the five-paragraph essay. The more difficult the problems people face, the more figurative writing needs to be. This is the realm of poetry and fiction. A good, vivid metaphor can provide deep insight into unclear and messy human conditions. A poem, short story, or novel can offer solutions as well as raise questions.
