Pros A central tenet of American democracy is that the individual has the right to live his or her life free from governmental intrusion. While public education is necessary to a healthy democracy, it frequently oversteps its rightful boundaries and imposes subject matter and values that conflict and interfere with religious and parental authority. No student should be subjected to a value-laden education under the guise of the official school curriculum.
Cons It is unethical not to give students the benefits of modern medical knowledge. Scientific facts are value-neutral. Knowing how to prevent sexually transmitted disease is not an endorsement or condemnation of a particular religious stance. It is important for the school curriculum to try to anticipate the future needs of students and society at large. Not teaching about human sexuality and AIDS will have disastrous consequences.
