Art and Architecture: Freedom of Expression and Form

Art and Architecture: Freedom of Expression and Form

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"It is important that a democracy provide financial support to its artists without censorship."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
There is no better measure of the quality of a civilization than the art it produces. Art provides a mirror of the present and possible images of the future. We may not like what we see in the reflection, but it is important that the mirror, the art world, be free to expose the best and the worst of what we are and of what we have done. Thus, the support of artists is one of the highest callings of a democracy.

Cons
The government has no business subsidizing the art industry. Laissez faire capitalism is just as important for the art world as it is for the rest of business; artists need to produce marketable art. Government handouts merely perpetuate mediocrity. Good art will thrive without government intervention.
