Science and Exploration: Dinosaurs, Fossils and The Origins of Life

Science and Exploration: Dinosaurs, Fossils and The Origins of Life

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"With the advent of successful animal cloning, science has stepped beyond moral and ethical bounds; the cloning of animals should be stopped."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
If an adult human can be cloned in the laboratory, the original, as mass-marketers know, will lose its value. Civilization is based on respect for the unique value of the individual. Already, TV commentators debate who should be cloned. Who is the better, more deserving human being: Stephen Hawking, Michael Jordan, Ronald Reagan, or Toni Morrison? Besides the fact that such a question ignores the impact of environment on human character, it is absurd and should not be asked in the first place. All human beings are equal. The continued study of animal cloning can only result in disequilibrium and a devaluation of human life. The truth is, we don't need more people; we need to value the ones already here.

Cons
Pure science, pure knowledge, is not bound by ethical or moral standards. But the application of that knowledge has for centuries provided humanity with a vastly improved quality of life. Ignorance has argued against gravity, the solar system, surgery and inoculation. And yet we have landed on the moon, conducted countless life-saving operations, and effectively stopped most of the world's deadliest diseases. While it takes time to understand the potential uses of any scientific discovery, history clearly demonstrates that science benefits mankind.
