Education in the 21st Century

Education in the 21st Century

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"A tax should be placed on high tech industries to fund the purchase of technology for public schools."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
The costs of technology are high, and public schools are faced with decreasing budgets. As a result, schools are producing a generation of Americans who will not be prepared for the digital workplace of the 21st century. But students who learn on the best hardware and software will come to expect the same quality of technology in their adult lives. High tech industries will be the benefactors from this investment in future consumers. This small seed, a tax, will yield a large harvest.

Cons
Such a tax would place an unfair burden on one industry. A populace educated in technology will benefit all of society, not merely high tech industries. Should agriculture or publishing be taxed because students eat hot lunches and read books? In addition, education is an important consumer of high tech products. Rather than penalizing high tech industries by imposing an unfair tax, the opposite should occur. Tax breaks should be offered these corporations to stimulate their continued growth and development.
