Crossroads of My Life

Crossroads of My Life

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

"Benefit plans, including health insurance and retirement, should be portable from one job to another."

Please review the arguments for and against the statement and enter your response.

Pros
It is a fact of today's job market that people change jobs frequently. Sometimes these changes occur by choice, sometimes by necessity. In either case, loss of the benefits from the past employer can place devastating burdens on the employee and his or her family. Ultimately, society pays the price in increased costs for Medicare and Social Security. In the long run, society will be better off if the new employer is required to carry over and reinvest the health insurance and retirement plans of new employees.

Cons
Such a government regulation would place an undue burden on companies which provide health insurance and retirement plans. New employees' pre-existing medical conditions could potentially bankrupt health insurance plans. All the employees served will then lose their years of investment. In reality, non-portability of insurance benefits serves the greater good by protecting the financial health of the insurance company. Also, there is no structure to transfer accrued benefits from one employer to another. Will the government enter into the business and develop a mega-benefits corporation? Ultimately, the responsibility for financial security must lie with the individual, not the government.
