Pros You have to believe in something greater than yourself, or life is meaningless. If you’re only concerned with your own well-being, you can’t have meaningful relationships with other people. If you’re only living for yourself, you have no goals other than gratifying your own immediate desires. People who live that way become bored with one thing after another and eventually lose interest in life altogether. If everyone behaved that way, the world would truly belong to the violent and the selfish. The only thing that restrains tyrants and thugs is the knowledge that somewhere, there are people who are willing to die in defense of justice. If you believe in any value greater than your own life, you should be willing to lay down your life for it. |

Cons There are lots of ways to help other people without getting yourself killed. If you sacrifice yourself for a cause that goes down to defeat, your life will have been wasted. You will never be able to do all the good things you might have done if you had lived. Even if your cause succeeds you won't be there to know about it. If one side in a war is right, the others are all fighting and dying for the wrong reasons. What good comes from their sacrifice? There will always be people who enjoy danger and excitement. Why not let them do the fighting? If life is worth living it shouldn't be thrown away no matter how noble the cause sounds. |
