Pros Representative democracy came about partially from the fact that it was difficult for everyone to stop their work and travel to governmental sessions. But the digital revolution is having a dramatic impact on the dimensions of time and space. It will soon be possible for all citizens to use their personal computers to log on and vote from home. Such a system would reawaken the sagging interest in democracy demonstrated by low voter turn-outs. Voters would receive instantaneous feedback on local, state, and national issues. Back door politicking and lobbying would cease. |

Cons Digital democracy would not work for two reasons. First, ordinary citizens do not have sufficient time, energy or education to be able to vote on the important issues that face Congress. Elected representatives work full-time to understand the complex issues facing our nation. Second, direct democracy would promote an opinion poll mentality subject to the emotional fluctuations of the masses. |
